Staff

Alex Marthews, of Medford, MA, has been Executive Director of Growth Through Learning since April 2008. He has run nonprofits in Waltham, MA and San Jose, CA, and has traveled extensively in Africa and Asia. He has an MPP from UC Berkeley and a BA in English from Cambridge University. Alex works part-time for GTL, and the rest of the time looks after his twin daughters Cordelia and Elizabeth.

Dr. Florence Nyamu is GTL’s Kenya coordinator. She has a Ph.D. from Harvard, and runs Creta Consultants, a consulting firm in Nairobi, Kenya. Her two daughters Nancy and Caroline assist her in the coordination work. Florence has served as an education specialist with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWA) and as a consultant with the Center for African Family Studies (CAFS). Dr. Nyamu serves on the boards of a number of educational institutions and is the author of numerous papers on girls, education, development and human rights.

Ashley Frechette is GTL’s Tanzania coordinator. She is a US citizen who emigrated to Tanzania in 2005. She owns two art galleries (www.fineartzgallery.com), one in the city of Arusha and one in the town of Karatu. She has been deeply involved in Tanzanian education issues since she was in high school, at first with the Friends of Tanzanian Schools and later with running an after-school enrichment club for girls in grade school. She is assisted in her work by Salma Yatere, who is a bank manager in Moshi, Tanzania.

Sister Salome Nnambi is GTL’s Uganda coordinator. She is the headmistress of St. Kizito’s High School, where GTL sponsors 58 girls. Sister Salome has a Masters degree in education from Makerere University in Kampala. She is assisted in her work by GTL graduate Sylivia Namubiru and also by Cis Nakiboneka.
