GTL Grows Rapidly, Plans 300 Scholarships in 2010 (Up From 226)
With solid fundraising results in the first quarter, and a better financial position than expected, we have felt able to increase our scholarships budget substantially this year, from $156,000 to $194,000. For the first time, we will be providing enough funds to sponsor up to three hundred East African girls. The need in East Africa is very great, so we expect few difficulties in finding qualified and needy girls to sponsor. What it may mean in the future is that we will need to invest in more staff support, in Africa or the US, to handle a higher volume of applications
We are also, through a new Graduate Task Force, making more determined efforts to track what happens to young women sponsored by GTL when they leave school – what kinds of jobs they can get, how well they are paid, and the ways that their education benefits their community. We’ll report on our findings in a future issue of the Global Village News.
