President’s Message

Release Date:  July 1, 2009 from GTL Newsletter

Like many of you, GTL is feeling the effect of the global economic recession. Even as tuition fees in East Africa go up, you, GTL’s supporters, have to decide about contributing to GTL in the context of difficult financial times. As you decide, I’d like you to know how GTL makes the most of every dollar you give by minimizing non-scholarship expenses.

GTL has just one part-time paid staff person. We are lucky that Alex Marthews, our Executive Director, brings us the perfect mix of enthusiasm and expertise. We have closed our office in Worcester, and Alex now works out of his home, saving GTL $5,000 a year in office expenses.

One of our greatest assets is the generosity and dedication of the GTL scholarship coordinators: Florence Nyamu in Kenya, Sr. Salome Nnambi in Uganda, and Ashley Frechette in Tanzania. Each of these three professional women gives her time and expertise to ensure that GTL scholarships go to girls who are academically qualified, but whose families do not have the money to send them to school. Each has her own full time career, and yet they make time to find qualified girls, meet with headmistresses, and process applications and tuition fees. In return for their hard work, GTL gives them each a token annual stipend of $500. Your generous support of GTL, along with the hard work of Alex, Florence, Sr. Salome, Ashley, and an exceptionally active Board, gives more than 200 girls a high-school education, a vital tool for realizing their dreams for themselves, their families and their communities.

Invest in a girl. She’ll do the rest.
