Release Date:  March 1, 2010 from External Publications

Makarere University in Kampala is the most prestigious university in East Africa. Makarere has now, according to The Monitor, overtaken the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania in terms of research publications, and is at number 15 among African universities, up from number 59 two years ago. Globally, it ranks 2,685 among the 8,000 universities surveyed by Webometrics, up from 3,811. The Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Venansius Baryamureeba, has announced that in order to reduce its tuition costs, Makarere will sharply reduce its number of part-time lecturers from over 900 to 200, and that it will redesign and merge its courses, reducing the courses offered by 30 to 40%. Currently, Makarere's tuition rates run at approximately $1,700 per year.

Six young Ugandan women are currently being sponsored by GTL to study for courses at Makarere University. It is the highest dream to which many of our girls aspire.
