Volunteer Opportunities
Sometimes the best way to give back is to give time. Here are volunteer opportunities that will make a real difference to our work:
Board Members
We are on the lookout for new Board Members. The Board of Directors meets three times a year, and we are especially interested in people who have a background in banking or experience of Africa. Please give us a call if you are interested, at 781-646-2446.
Story Writer
At GTL, we have extensive materials on each girl we currently sponsor, and each girl we have sponsored in the past. The Story Writer intern will complete the task of writing up the stories for each girl we currently sponsor, and will then delve into our archives to write up the stories of girls who graduated out of our program between 1997 and 2007. You can see one such story on the main page.
The aim of this project is to motivate and inspire people in the US to become more willing to sponsor a girl’s education, which makes it primarily a fundraising project; but the best of our stories also get used when evaluating whether to continue sponsoring a girl, on our website, in our newsletter, in our brochure, on Facebook and elsewhere. Our Story Writers last year found that during this process, they learned a lot about East African culture and the lives of girls in the developing world. This position would suit someone with strong writing skills, so when you apply, please focus your resume and cover letter around your writing and fundraising experience.
During the semester, for high school student interns, the presumed times for this internship would be 3-5pm MWF.
The presumed summer internship dates are July 5 – August 25, though interns may start earlier if they wish.
The office is located at 14 Fairfield St., West Medford, MA 02155. It is in a private home without disabled access.
When you apply, please include a resume and a cover letter explaining why you think you would be suitable for the specific position applied for. If you are interested in more than one of the internships, please submit separate cover letters and resumes for each.
All internships with GTL are unpaid.
Web Intern
GTL has been expanding and updating its presence online, in two main places: our website and our Facebook page. However, we have a long way to go before either of these sites are interactive enough, rather than just being informative, and before they do a truly great job of engaging our donors and potential donors. So, we are recruiting for a web intern to upload and refresh content onto the website (including the stories produced by the Story Writer), and to strategize about how best to improve these sites.
We are also running Google ads, and are planning a marketing experiment this summer to advertise through Facebook and examine how targeted we can make our advertising. The web intern would assist with these aspects of our work, learning about search advertising and web traffic analysis.
This position would suit someone with strong technical skills and their own laptop. Experience with html, with setting up or updating websites, blogging or other website-related work is all highly relevant. You should also have great spelling, so that we don’t have to worry about typos too much. Please focus on those factors in your resume and cover letter.
This position is an ongoing one, for 6 hours/week, 3-5pm MWF.
The office is located at 14 Fairfield St., West Medford, MA 02155. It is in a private home without disabled access.
To apply please email Executive Director Alex Marthews at execdir@growththroughlearning.org. Include a resume and a cover letter explaining why you think you would be suitable for the specific position applied for. If you are interested in more than one of the internships, please submit separate cover letters and resumes for each.

Fundraising Intern
Have you ever considered a career working for nonprofits? The first thing nonprofits look for is people with fundraising experience. This internship offers you the opportunity to work with the Executive Director to learn the nuts and bolts of how to do fundraising, and, more importantly, how not to do fundraising.
In this position, you’ll help implement our five-year fundraising strategy, come up with new ideas, and work on our summer fundraising campaign.
This position would suit someone with strong writing and interpersonal skills. A friendly, courteous, positive attitude is a must, and a good phone manner is also very useful. Please focus on those factors in your resume and cover letter.
Minimum age: 15 years old as of 06/30/2010.
This is a summer internship, starting July 5 and ending August 25, though you may start earlier if you wish. It is unpaid, 10 hours/week, MWF, exact schedule negotiable; longer hours available if desired.

Program Analyst
The program analyst will assist our Graduates Task Force to support the process of generating meaningful analysis of the following questions:
- What does it mean to say that a GTL graduate has been “successful”?
- What kinds of role do GTL graduates play in their communities?
- What kinds of job are GTL graduates able to obtain?
- What are the major differences in educational culture between the three countries that are likely to affect the educational outcomes of poor girls?
The program analyst will also develop summary statistics on past and current program participants, to better inform GTL’s management on the types of girls assisted by the program.
We have developed and piloted survey instruments, and will have a wealth of new data in July from our May-June trip to see the GTL schools and students. The program analyst will process and analyze these data.
This internship would suit someone with very strong analytical skills, expertise in Excel, their own laptop, and ideally some knowledge of issues relating to survey design and program evaluation. Please focus on those factors in your resume and cover letter.
Minimum age: 18 years old as of 06/30/2010. Some college preferred.
